THE WHITE BOOKS

Add and Sub cover only

Mult and Div cover only

Frac Dec Per cover only

The White Books have 3 key goals:

1) Identify the key strategies to be taught/ learnt at each year level.
2) Provide a progression of strategies which build on what a student has learnt at the previous year level.
3) Identify a standard method for recording working

The activity sheets have been broken into 6 sections and a free video is provided for every activity:

1) Example Question: The Learning Intention is introduced and a worked example is provided.
2) Section 1: This section is heavily scaffolded to help students develop confidence with the strategy.
3) Stop Check: This question ensures students understand why the strategy works.
4) Section 2: No scaffolding is provided
5) Word Problems: Students now apply the strategy they have learnt to word problems.
6) Review: The key points in the lesson are highlighted.

FIFTEENS

fifteens

Score tries using your basic facts.

Players aim to win as many cards as they can by scoring a try. A try is scored by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing the cards in your hand to make 15. You can use 1, 2, 3 or all 4 cards to make 15 but obviously the more cards you can use the better.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION - HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED

Addition and Subtraction helping students succeed

This book is designed specifically for the teaching of Numeracy. It covers all addition and subtraction skills required from the first year of school through to early secondary. This books offers.

  • Activity sheets which explain and teach in detail the strategy being learnt.
  • Activity sheets with a high degree of scaffolding to support the learner throughout the activity.
  • Three characters who offer hints as well as highlighting important information for the learner.

This resource may be photocopied for use within the house or school of purchase.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

Addition and subtraction

This book is designed to be used in conjunction with Numeracy Projects Addition and Subtraction book. It offers activity sheets which cover every lesson taught in the Numeracy Project. Every activity sheet is broken into four sections:

  • Prior knowledge required: This section gives students a chance to practise the skills which are a prerequisite to successfully completing this activity.
  • New strategy with materials: The questions posed during this part of the activity sheet are suitable for use with materials. The materials required are described at the top of this section.
  • New strategy using imaging: This section is the next stepping stone from the materials section. Here materials are not provided. Thinking maps are often drawn here to model how a student should think about/ image the problem in his/her head.
  • Word problems using number properties: These questions test students ability to generalise what they have learnt into real world questions.

This book contains answers and other photocopiable material.

MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION

Multiplication and Division

This book is designed to be used in conjunction with the Numeracy Projects Multiplication and Division book. It offers two activity sheets which cover every lesson taught in the Numeracy Project. Every activity sheet is broken into four sections:

  • Prior knowledge required: This section gives students a chance to practice the skills which are a prerequisite to successfully completing this activity.
  • New Strategy with materials: The questions posed during this part of the activity sheet are suitable for use with materials. The materials required are described at the top of this section.

FRACTIONS

Fractions Decimals and Percentages

This book is designed to be used in conjunction with the Numeracy Projects Fractions, Decimals and Percentages book. It offers activity sheets which cover every lesson taught in the Numeracy Project. Every activity sheet is broken into four sections. Typically students require more time at the materials stage in these strategies which is reflected in the length and detail of the materials section over the two page activity sheet:

  • Prior knowledge required: This section gives students a chance to practice the skills which are a prerequisite to successfully completing this activity.
  • New Strategy with materials: The questions posed during this part of the activity sheet are suitable for use with materials. The materials required are described at the top of this section.

ALGEBRA

Algebra

This book is designed to be used in conjunction with the Numeracy Projects Algebra book. Algebra should not be taught as a distinct separate strand instead these lessons should be integrated into the teaching of the other numeracy strands (the previous books). This book is designed for stages AA (Advanced Additive) to AP (Advanced Proportional). Where appropriate and possible activities are broken into the sections outlined below however some of the higher lessons do focus solely on Imaging and Number properties.

  • Prior knowledge required: This section gives students a chance to practice the skills which are a prerequisite to successfully completing this activity.
  • New Strategy with materials: The questions posed during this part of the activity sheet are suitable for use with materials. The materials required are described at the top of this section.
  • New strategy using imaging: This section is the next stepping stone from the materials section. Here materials are not provided. Thinking maps are often drawn here to model how a students should think about/ image the problem in his/her head.

BASIC FACTS

Basic facts

This book is designed to cover the teaching of every Basic Fact from Emergent through to Advanced Proportional stages (e.g. “adding and subtracting facts to five” – “Common factors in numbers up to 100 and highest common factors”.) There are 72 pages of activity sheets which teach these skills.

  • New strategy using imaging: This section is the next stepping stone from the materials section. Here materials are not provided. Thinking maps are often drawn here to model how a students should think about/ image the problem in his/her head.
  • Word problems using number properties: These questions test students ability to generalise what they have learnt into real world questions.

This book also includes a school wide basic facts assessment resource. This resource includes tests, and graphs for students to record their achievement and improvements on. This resource may be photocopied for use within the house or school of purchase.
